Day of the Dead
Three artist friends and I had a phantom gallery in Windsor California a few years ago. The town planned a major Day of the Dead celebration and asked the gallery if we would put up an altar. We did. What happened next was unexpected. We placed photos of our departed loved ones on the altar. Then, strangers came in asking if we would add pictures of their departed friends and family. We did. I asked artist friends to create small painting to hang above the altar. They did. And suddenly, I was painting and painting small canvases with a Day of the Dead theme. I couldn’t stop. Along the way I learned that, although the Day of the Dead honors those who are no longer on the earthly plane, it is also a celebration of life. When children dance with caricatures of death, eat skull sugar molds and learn to respect that life is brief, they learn there is a circle to life and to not fear death. Then are free to enjoy and appreciate every moment. The Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 2nd.
Note: All 6" X 6" Day of the Dead paintings are mounted on panels and coated with a protective sealer. They are ready to hang.
